Hello!

Spring is in the air at last and there is a spring in our step as we approach the last major project for the year, the sweetest, nicest, yet most intriguing undertaking for some time. A new collaboration always brings new excitement to the fore. Even a well established one such as our work with William Barton still manages to raise the temperature but Sweet Dreams, the new production with Stephen Mushin is possibly the most mysterious of all the creative ventures we have been involved with. Is it because dreams bring up the most elusive and often incomprehensible sequence of events? Is it because we work with the mere reflection of reality, shadows and objects projected through and onto screens, things that can no longer be grasped or touched? Or is it because we are simply trying to give shape and form to the far corners of our fantasy and imagination?

After much kitchen-style experimentation, we are now preparing the musical cornerstones of this new program and preparing ourselves for the inevitable appearing and disappearing acts. How else to describe the notion of manipulating objects and puppets whilst singing? My very first experience of the ‘performing arts’ was puppet theatre. It summoned up everything that my five-year old former self knew or didn’t know: images, dialogue, entertainment, fantasy and music. The laughter around me and the questioning within me still goes on and I hope that this new venture with someone as remarkable as Stephen Mushin will bring back some of your own memories of childhood, a time of magic and innocence.

In the meantime, we have all the details of our 2012 program at hand and have been heartened by the early response. After all, it is for you, our loyal audience, that we have assembled these programs and these extraordinary artists. Please spread the word or for those who have not encountered our work before, take the plunge with Sweet Dreams. It will no doubt be a great introduction to the company and demonstrate what a small group of dedicated artists is capable of. We also want to tell you about our incredible experience in Western Australia and Northern Territory with William Barton in July/August. More recently, the MODART performances on Cockatoo Island presented seven emerging composers to the public. The range of the work was quite breathtaking and audiences, young and old, were delighted.

On offer were many and varied imaginative prizes sourced by Amy Curl, Marketing and Philanthropy Manager in support of the Song Company. Enthusiastic donors spoke about the lasting and unique benefits of commissioning a new work and our supporters had the rare opportunity to commission a handwritten score and a recording by Andrew Ford, one of Australia’s leading composers.

Supporters were introduced to Jehan Kanga from our Young Artist’s program. MODART 11 composer Ekram (Istanbul/ Sydney) spoke about the value of the mentoring opportunities offered by MODART, a critical development opportunity for young composers.

The Song Company for one third of the year becomes “the Touring Song Company”, and in July we were granted a wonderful opportunity to explore Western Australia and Northern Territory. We met our honorary Song Company member William Barton in Sydney and placed ourselves in the capable hands of our tour leader Tos Mahoney who is the Artistic Director of Tura New Music in Perth.

Along for the journey was Eamon Dimmitt as production assistant and film-maker extraordinaire, and Guy Smith who took care of our sound and lighting requirements. Our notorious percussion instruments came along too in glamorous shopping bags along with five didgeridoos, and countless kilos of production gear. Check-in at the airport became quite a spectacle, and light aircraft heaved under the weight of our baggage, making my normally over-stocked suitcase featherweight in comparison.

We first performed in the Perth Concert Hall where we met our prime sponsors Total E&P Australia along with other supporters. The acoustic and grand scale of the Concert Hall did great service to our program including Ross Edwards’ Southern Cross Chants and Dawn Mantras. We had a ball performing Kalkadunga Man which was devised by William and the Song Company with accompanying images of Mt Isa by Allan Chawner; it truly is a show that illustrates the beauty and diversity of the Australian landscape along with evocative and of course, challenging pieces for us to sing. After a lovely reception drinks followed by the obligatory late Chinese Meal after the show, the next three weeks saw us take in the WA sights of Geraldton, Carnarvon, Exmouth, and then on to NT – Darwin, the Kimberley, Batchelor and then back to WA again – Kununurra, the Dampier Peninsula, finishing in Broome. Each day we discovered beautiful sights, natural wonders and wonderfully receptive audiences. Sweeping sunsets over red-stained beaches, towering termite mounds, endless sand dunes, driving for hundreds of kilometres on unsealed red sandy roads and snorkelling with fragile sea-life amongst a beautiful reef were some of the fantastic experiences I will never forget. Swimming holes surrounded by thundering waterfalls saw our motley crew of ten splash and play like young children. We performed in all manner of venues – five star resorts such as Ningaloo Reef and Pinctada; Gwoonwardu Mia Aboriginal Cultural Centre, and small community concerts at Beagle Bay, One Arm Point and Lombardina in Dampier.

Singing and making music is an incredible privilege and I am continually reminded that music continually transcends all divides and links humanity in a way words and actions cannot. We are afforded the ability to present and discuss our music with people from all walks of life and instantly find a way to connect our seemingly disparate lives.

on tour with Kalkadunga Man

Whilst rehearsing outside our hut in Cape Levique on the Dampier Peninsula, we were “stumbled upon” by a solitary walker. She asked permission to listen to our music-making as it had drawn her to us, and then after a few minutes recognised Anna from Sydney. She was so grateful to us for bringing music to her day. In the Kimberley we performed alongside Velanga Khoza, a storyteller and musician from South Africa who had me singing the next day on a breakfast cruise teaching the rest of the boat a traditional call and response piece whilst playing his tiny thumb piano (kalimba). The primary school children at One Arm Point were fascinated by Williams’ demonstration of the Didgeridoo and rushed over to us after the show to talk, laugh and ask a thousand questions. The tour was organised by Tura New Music and Tos Mahoney was an incredible tour-guide. He managed our every need including meals and sightseeing opportunities and boy did we eat some amazing food! Helen Symon joined us mid-tour-an extremely hard-working executive and mother of two from Melbourne who came along just to experience our world and help us along the way. She was a delightful companion for us all and we appreciate her help and friendship very much.

Our last performance was set in the gardens of the opulent Pinctada Cable Beach Resort. Our production team had been setting up all day in the heat and we performed to hundreds of guests and locals. The guests in the rooms immediately around the garden had a great view and sat on their balconies with a drink and took in the spectacle. The sound of our voices and the Didgeridoo pervading the still, clear air was a strong experience for me that night, and we were rewarded by the warm response of the audience and so many smiling faces. We were left with many lovely memories and a sense of privilege to experience the beauty of our land and meet wonderful people along the way. A great life indeed!

MODART FAQs

What is MODART and who was involved this year?

The Song Company in partnership with the Australian Music Centre held the fifth biannual presentation of MODART, the Song Company’s Young Composer forum. The program has grown since its inception in 2003 to be a critical project in Australia for the professional development of the next generation of composers. Through our partnership with the ABC, MODART composers were interviewed about their works and plans for the future by Stephen Adams, Producer, Australian Music Unit, ABC Classic FM. These young composers also had the critical opportunity of their works recorded in a studio for later broadcast.

Roland Peelman tells us more about the composers, selected from a nationwide search and farther afield, as part of MODART11. Composers were: Leah Barclay (Brisbane); Tristan Coelho (Sydney); Demian Galindo, (Guadalajara, Mexico); Annie Hsieh (Melbourne); Ekrem Mülayim (NSW/Turkey); Timothy Tate (Brisbane); Alex van den Broek (Christchurch, New Zealand).

All composers first gathered with the group in late February 2011 for the first stage of development and all but one (Galindo from Mexico) returned for the second stage in late September, leading up to the two performances on Cockatoo Island on October 1 and 2 followed by a studio recording in Eugene Goosens Studio, ABC on 5 October.

As before, the project drew varied responses from the different composers, which resulted in an engaging performance program. As in 2009, a competitive selection process (only five from Australia and two overseas composers) and the full 2-stage process with continued close communication in between, also guaranteed a high level of proficiency.

Each of these composers (all under 30) already has a remarkable story to tell and has arrived at his/her craft from a different perspective. Leah Barclay abandoned traditional score composition for electro-acoustic work. Her work became a impressive soundscape of pre-recorded hydrophonic sounds with vocal improvisation and extensive use of Kolokol, speech-rhythms from the South Indian carnatic tradition. Alex van den Broek’s background is jazz. He complied with a restrained contrapuntal setting of a poem by a fellow Dutch New Zealand artist.

Ekrem Mülayim is equally at home in theatre and music. Ekram created a new language (‘nun’) as the focus of his work. Tate, Galindo, Hsieh and Coelho develop their craft through more traditional notation. Galindo’s setting of a Huichol text used a variety of sounds and unusual vocal effects. Annie Hsieh‘s work “ (/iu/ “ and Tristan Coelho’s work “The Writer’s Hand” showed assurance.

What’s next?

MODART composers discussed their plans for the future as part of the concert presentation. All are engaged in interesting projects. For Leah Barclay (Brisbane) this involves a trip to the Amazon to make field recordings for a future work. For Ekram Mülayim (Istanbul/Sydney) his future project will centre on a performance on the Island of Fogo (off the coast of Newfoundland, near the Arctic Circle).

Postscript from MODART 11 composer Alex van den Broek (Christchurch)

“I would like to say how much I enjoyed the entire experience. It was great getting the opportunity to work with such exceptional singers, interacting and being inspired by other emerging composers and the education and mentoring I received from Roland and the singers in the process. You were all such a pleasure to work with and get to know.

I also feel like I have grown so much as a composer during this experience. Not least of which is how much I learned about vocal writing in the process. Being a composer is often a frustrating and solitary occupation and MODART11 was the exception to this rule.”

The last two weeks have been a whirlwind but the show is getting better and better with every performance. We opened in Orange to a keen audience of about 300 and we couldn’t have been happier!

We performed amidst vats in a winery in Bathurst, sold out the City Gallery in Wollongong, managed to miss the storms in Canberra and STILL get excellent numbers at the Street Theatre.

We received a standing ovation from our dear friends in Newcastle last night and tonight it’s onwards to the Glasshouse in Port Macquarie. We’re thrilled to be returning to Port Macquarie for the first time since 2005! Our final performance is at City Recital Hall Angel Place on Sunday afternoon before kicking back and sharing a few Christmas drinks.

The feedback has been wonderful with accordion sensation Marcello Maio stealing the show with his interpretation of some of the world’s most passionate music and winning more than just one heart along the way!

“…Marcello Maio provided sizzling accompaniment and deep emotional engagement with the repertoire” and went on to say “Maio stole the show with his remarkable musicianship, expertly navigating the exhilarating Libertango by Piazzolla¸ and providing numerous rich and varied accompaniments including the exquisitely delicate accompaniment for Silent Night.”
Jennifer Gill, Canberra Times – December 6.

>> View photos from Canberra’s performance at the Street Theatre last Sunday.

>>Listen to soprano Anna Fraser and Marcello Maio in their interpretation of the French favourite “Les Feuilles Mortes”.

Listen to Les Feuilles Mortes

Tickets are still available to the following performances!

Port Macquarie Glass House, Friday 10 Dec @ 7.30pm
Sydney City Recital Hall Angel Place, Sunday 11 Dec @ 3pm.

Program highlights include tangos by Astor Piazzola, Brazilian bossa nova Corcovado (Quiet Nights and Quiet Dreams), carols from Mexico, folksongs from Colombia, French favourite Les Feuilles mortes (Autumn Leaves) and Brel’s ‘Ne me quitte pas’.

Don’t miss your opportunity to experience the Song Company a devilishly different light.

>> Book tickets online or phone on 8256 2222.

After three weeks of touring around this diverse country and 10 performances (in 10 regional centres) of our two programs, The Seasons and Sweet Dreams, the title of our older program, The Seasons (Sweet Dreams was specifically devised for the New Zealand tour with the premiere performances of Jack Body’s new work), couldn’t have been more appropriately named based on the nature of the weather we’ve encountered along the way! Our arrival in Invercargill was welcomed by a violent hail storm and 50km winds from the Antarctic which thankfully passed but couldn’t match the wild southerly we experienced on round return trip from Napier to Auckland, via Lake Taupo, a week later where we were met with snow! Our tour travelling companion, Iris, close friend of Roland and wife of Frank Nuyts (the Belgian composer whose work “Old Airs” featured in our Seasons program) thought she would experience warm, delightful spring weather during her tour of NZ however was quite surprised by the snowy dusting on the mountain tops – it made for lovely postcard images!

Spring did welcome us to Christchurch however where mother nature was taking her annual course – the charming, somewhat neo-classical English town with its punting down the River Avon, divine gardens in bloom and picturesque historic buildings although a little worse for wear after the recent quake. Of course The Song Company weren’t without a reminder we were in the famous shaky islands when we woke to a 5.3 quake early on Oct 4 which was exhilarating for most!

The performances themselves have been extremely successful and well received and we have been blessed predominantly with great acoustics at the venues. The regional audiences and Chamber Music New Zealand subscribers have been blown away by the unique nature of our programming, as they rarely have vocal ensembles in their annual concert series and none quite like The Song Company, and their warm hospitality has made us feel very welcome. There have been some unexpected meetings with long lost friends (Mark encountered a fellow singer and contemporary from the Queensland Con in Napier), former Song Company subscribers (from Newcastle and who have returned to their home town of Dunedin) and even former members of the Ensemble (a soprano from 1990) along the way. We also caught up with composers Gareth Farr and Na-lin Shen post the Wellington performance – having sung their works in Australia and on the China tour earlier this year, it was a delight to finally meet them in the flesh.

The premiere performance of Jack Body’s new works of Dreams (and a nightmare) in Christchurch, featured in our Sweet Dreams program, must also be mentioned as a huge success. The pieces were received with much acclaim and beautifully complimented his older Lullabies. The second half of the program greatly contrasted to the divine and more well-known 16th and 17th Century English and Italian repertoire of the first half but we took the audience on a journey through the subconscious with Jack’s music and Roland cleverly devised this half to include the poetry of Lewis Carol, Margaret Attwood, Mark Twain and Shakespeare to compliment the Lullabies and Dreams of Jack’s. It was praised by many as vocally amazing and sublimely entertaining.

Although we haven’t had a great deal of time to linger too long in the various regional centres and venture off into the wilderness, we have discovered some moments of repose and reflection on this whirlwind of a tour (clocking up 11 flights in 3 weeks!) . Rainforest and beach walks in New Plymouth and Raglan (a short distance from Hamilton), a visit to the geothermal region of Rotorua and a few days in Nelson (whilst we worked with the wonderfully inspiring Julian Raphael on the Ensembles in Schools program at Victory Primary School) to enjoy magical landscapes and maybe stop in at a few wineries in one of the finest wine regions in the world! We can’t complain.

Anna Fraser 18/20/10

Our run began in Canberra on the 8th of August, then on to Wollongong, Sydney and finished up in Newcastle of the 12th. Audiences were strong in all four cities and comedian Drew Forsythe was the perfect addition to the Song Company. Those who attended will corroborate that Drew had audiences in stitches with his seemingly endless array of comedic expressions. Playing 13 different characters and using only a handful of simple props, Drew expertly flitted between characters never once skipping a beat as he switched hats and expressions several times within one conversation.

Period musicians Tommie Andersson and Laura Vaughan played beautifully and our very own Roland Peelman directed the group from behind the harpsichord giving us a taste of yet another one of his many virtuosic talents!

We had some fabulous reviews and feedback. Here’s what people were saying…

For its musical sophistication, imagination and fun, this is one of the best concerts in Sydney this year. Peter McCallum, SMH

We are long-time subscribers of the Song Company, so we know that we can only expect concerts that are creative, sophisticated, educative and exciting. The presentation of this madrigal-like commedia d’elle arte piece pushed all the boundaries of those adjectives. Further the production was funny and witty, with word plays and multiple layers of idea, character and language adding to the musicality. Jan Larson, Subscriber

I’ve always enjoyed listening to baroque music – it smoothes my crumpled soul. Hearing it together with Drew Forsythe’s antics and plot summaries increased the enjoyment by an order of magnitude. Oliver Johnson

It was about 15 years ago that the Song Company last set foot on the Chinese mainland when we extended a trip to Hong Kong by going by train to the teeming and hugely polluted city of Guanzhou. It was a somewhat strange experience with the whole trip being chaperoned by two minders who never let us out of their sight. The concert was also strange in that the audience didn’t stop talking and obviously had no knowledge of Renaissance music.

So it was with a certain amount of trepidation that we stepped off the plane in Shanghai and into a waiting bus to take us to our first port of call – the provincial city of Hangzhou with a population of 6 million people some 3 hour’s drive away. I think 15 years has seen enormous changes in China and we were delivered to a very pleasant modern hotel in the middle of the city. The theatre complex was also a revelation. China has obviously taken the performing arts to its heart and as part of the modernisation process has built beautiful facilities.

First performances are always a little nerve-wracking and Hangzhou was no exception. We were to perform three Chinese songs as part of our programme and had absolutely no idea how they would be received. We needn’t have worried however and the audience even joined in with some spirited clapping. The rest of the programme was a breeze and the audience seemed to really enjoy it.

Next stop was the historic canal city of Suzhou. Once again a very comfortable hotel and lovely venue. Suzhou has some very old gardens and we asked our driver if we had enough time to visit one before driving back to Shanghai. We were taken to a 16th century garden hidden behind high walls. Although very crowded, it was still possible to experience the peace of this beautiful garden of lakes , trees and rocks; truly a living work of art.

Next stop Shanghai where we were performing at the Australian National Day at Expo. Despite a busy schedule we still found time for some sightseeing in this most cosmopolitan of Chinese cities. Taking our courage in our hands we decided to use the wonderful new metro system to get to the famous Bund where we did some window shopping and walking along the river.

Expo was a strange experience. We all had to leave the hotel at 7.15 a.m. to get to the Expo site and then spent the next 12 hours in the performance venue before we were bussed back to the hotel that night. During that time we mixed with rock stars and fellow classical artists and did two performances displaying the best of Australia! All in the distinguished presence of the Governor General.

We were all sad to leave Shanghai. The hotel, the food and the shopping were all great. However Beijing beckoned. Beijing is a very different kettle of fish. It is of course a vast modern city, but one doesn’t have to go far from one’s hotel to find the harsh underside. Just behind the facade of huge modern buildings were dirt streets of single storey dwellings with tin roofs held on by loose bricks. I took a trip down the road to Tiannenmen Square and thought sadly of the events of 20 years ago. It was difficult to believe; nowadays the place is full of tourists taking photos of each other.

I found Beijing more polluted than the other cities we had visited. After a couple of hours wandering round the Forbidden City I had a really sore throat. It’s not the best place for a singer to go for too long.

Whilst in Beijing we repeated our Expo performance in The Egg, the iconic performing arts centre in the city. What an experience and what a building!

The next day we did a lecture recital at the conservatorium of music after which the staff took us out for a memorable meal – 14 dishes in a private room – where I experienced my first Peking duck; wonderful.

Our last performance was in the Beijing Concert Hall and it was probably the best. The audience was large and enthusiastic and we were rewarded with a standing ovation.

China was a wonderful experience. It has changed enormously over the last few years; the people are welcoming, the towns are clean and modern , the food is marvellous and the performing venues have to be seen to be believed. We have made many new friends there and we look forward to returning at some point in the not-too-distant future.

“Our concert at Blacktown Performing Arts Centre as part of the Aurora Festival was approaching and the music I had been learning for the past 4 months was about to stand the test, or more correctly, my brain was about to be stretched! Performing this programme for one night only….couldn’t we do it again tomorrow as well??

Text from the poetry of Les Murray was set by:

Damien Ricketson (Australia): Shoal

Gareth Farr (New Zealand): Les Murray Song Cycle

Frank Nuyts (Belgium): Old Airs

Alex Pozniak (Australia): New work

Andrew Ford (Australia): The Averted

Juan Filippe Waller (Mexico): Our Ray, Our Arrow

Pelle Gudmundson-Holmgreen (Denmark): Two Madrigals

Two of these composers were also with us on the night to premiere and introduce their work: Alex Pozniak and Andrew Ford.

The members of the Song Company were giving me good wishes and then suddenly we were on. It was been recorded by ABC FM so I had to pass the test.

And what a wonderful night it was, this also being Ruth McCall’s last performance before her baby arrives. With all that pregnancy can do to alter the voice she sang with finesse and grace as always.

Each piece captured the essence of Murray’s poetry; word play, rhythmic complexities and tonal nuances given virtuosic rendering by the singers. This was music to challenge our senses, offering a way to comprehend nature through Murray’s wonderful text and our distinct vocal sound.

The next day we were off to Brisbane to sing at Encounters- another new programme to learn, but for now the Murray was foremost in my mind. This night I will remember well, after many hours spent together gently and patiently teasing out the intricacies within the works in rehearsal.

An incredible journey completed with such talented musicians singing beautifully around me and Roland steadying my nerves with every wave of his hand.”
