Kalkadunga Man

Kalkadunga Man is a collaboration with celebrated didgeridoo player William Barton, photographer Allen Chawner and The Song Company, it will be performed in Melbourne (at the new Melbourne Recital Centre in the Elizabeth Murdoch Hall), Sydney (in City Recital Hall, Angel Place) and Regional NSW. The series of performances will take place from 18 February to 7 March 2009.

A sonic and visual feast, we present you an experience of the Australian night and day, as seen through the eyes of William Barton, a man from the Kalkadunga tribe near Mount Isa.

Photographer Allan Chawner’s powerful images of the Kalkadunga land will be projected on a large screen, while the visceral sounds of Barton’s “didg” combine with some of the most evocative vocal music written in Australia. This concert features works by Ross Edwards, William Barton, Sarah Hopkins, Dan Walker, Rosalind Page, as well as Guilliaume Dufay and Bernard de Cluni.

Born in Mount Isa, Barton was taught the didgeridoo by his uncle, an elder of the Waanyi, Lardil and Kalkadunga tribes of western Queensland, and has since performed on concert stages and at music festivals across Australia and around the world.
